For My Children

November 5th, 2024

by Sarah Skinner

People ask why

I named my daughters

after ancient goddesses

of war—

Athena,

someday,

you’ll hold the line

with spear and shield.

I gift you all the wisdom

of my mothers.

Freya,

Fearless Queen of Cat Ladies,

I will raise you to

stand tall,

shoulders back,

with eyes a‑fire.

Always remember,

you are magic.

I so name you, beloved ones.

If everything is taken away,

hold your name

to your ear like a seashell.

Listen—

a blue wave roars for you.

If he ever puts his hands

around your neck,

your mother has given you permission

to bite.
